ExCeL London
I played a key role as a Construction Planner for the expansion of ExCeL London, a world-class exhibition centre located in London's Royal Docks. This ambitious project, slated for completion in October 2024, will significantly enhance the venue's capacity by adding a brand new 25,000 sqm event space to its eastern side.
As a Construction Planner, I developed and maintained the project programme. This entailed breaking down the project into achievable phases, sequencing activities, identifying resource requirements, and meticulously monitoring progress against the baseline plan. I also fostered close collaboration with architects, engineers, and contractors to ensure the project remained on track and within budget.
Working on this large-scale project has significantly enhanced my expertise in programme management, resource allocation, and stakeholder communication. I'm proud to have been part of the team delivering this exciting new exhibition space for London.
Novotel London Canary Wharf
I played a crucial role as a construction planner on the Novotel Canary Wharf project, resulting in the world's tallest Novotel hotel – a soaring 39-story landmark. The project demanded meticulous planning from the start.
The Novotel Canary Wharf stands out not just for its height, but also for its commitment to sustainability. The hotel boasts the title of the first in AccorHotels’ UK portfolio to feature a vegetable garden, underscoring its focus on eco-friendly practices. This focus on sustainability is complemented by the hotel's design, which incorporates reclaimed materials and bespoke furniture, creating a unique and stylish interior.
One of the most remarkable feats of engineering on the project was the installation of the retractable louvered roof on the 39th floor. Designed to withstand high winds and avoid placing undue stress on the building's structure, the solution involved a 12-tonne steel lattice frame, a testament to the ingenuity required to bring this vision to life.
The project presented significant challenges beyond the rooftop design. The small size of the construction site demanded creative solutions to maximise space and ensure efficient material flow. Additionally, the presence of existing piles required careful consideration during the planning stages. Through meticulous planning and collaboration with other contractors, we were able to overcome these obstacles and deliver a successful outcome.
The Novotel Canary Wharf offers guests a luxurious experience with a touch of industrial chic. The hotel's design incorporates exposed brickwork and glass, creating a stylish and contemporary feel. This unique aesthetic is further enhanced by the panoramic views offered by the hotel's restaurant, bar, and rooftop terrace, providing guests with unforgettable vistas of London.
My involvement in this project showcases my ability to thrive in complex construction environments. Through meticulous planning, problem-solving, and collaboration, I helped deliver a successful outcome that not only met functional needs but also embraced the architectural vision and sustainability goals.
